MY VISION OF A GENDER EQUAL WORLD…

Image
Welcome my readers! Hope you’re doing well. This is going to be my last blog in my small attempt at blogging. I have been putting up small blogs on the topic that interests me so much, for which I have immense passion- Gender Equality. In today’s blog, I am going to share with you all what My vision of a gender-equal nation is like.  I wanted to discuss this vision starting from the minuscule part of a nation- family. The very fact that we as women are brought up differently as compared to men by our caregivers, teachers, relatives, etc., is in itself appalling as it is the breeding ground of gender roles and stereotypes. I would love it if parents, teachers, elders, and family become more cognizant and sensitive towards the upbringing of boys and girls. They should make sure that they don’t assign gender roles to their children, and let them freely express what they want to do with their lives. The freedom of a woman shouldn’t be curtailed based on her being a WOMAN!  Next, I...

HURDLES IN ACHIEVING A GENDER EQUAL WORLD...

Welcome my readers! Hope you all are doing well in this madness. So, whenever we talk about an issue, we start by introducing it, talking about its various forms and then we come to the reasons and causes behind the issue. Likewise, in today’s blog, I am going to talk about the hurdles in achieving a gender-equal world. Education is something that, according to me, has the power to change the status quo and quiver up those sitting at pedestals. Such a powerful tool of change is seldom accessible to women. Many girls do not get to complete their schools, they are married off at an early age or just asked to do household chores. When girls start menstruating especially in villages in India, their education opportunities are cut down and they are mostly confined to their homes. Lack of access to education to women as equal to men is one of the greatest hurdles towards attaining a gender-equal world. When we talk about education, it's essential to talk about the job opportunities...

Everyday Sexism and Gender Stereotypes...

Image
Welcome back to my blogs! These times are especially really hard for all of us, it’s difficult to put up to work but I try. In this blog, I particularly want to discuss two concepts that are both the cause and outcome of gender inequality; Gender stereotypes and sexism. Gender stereotypes are the beliefs people have about the distinct characteristics of males and females which are generally culturally specific and are sometimes hardcore deeply entrenched beliefs. Sexism, on the other hand, is the behavioral component of stereotypes. It means discriminating and having prejudiced behavior towards a person solely based on their sex. More often than not, it is women who face sexism on a day-to-day basis. Stereotypes work when making a judgment about others. For example- “Women are bad drivers” is a very widespread gender stereotype that exists. Thus, in a situation where there is a question of driving capabilities, women are looked down upon and become victims of many derogatory, sexual jo...

WHY GENDER EQUALITY?

Image
Hello my readers! Ever heard from people, “this girl talks too much about equality, such an oblivious human, knows nothing about constitutional rights of all citizens being treated as equals”. Yes? Well, this is what I get to hear on a regular basis. Let’s dive deeper into this statement and see why it’s problematic. It is clear that we all do have constitutional rights and Article 14 of the Constitution of India reads as under: “The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India.” Does this mean we all are actually equal? Not in reality.  There are so many issues in the world right now, climate change, terrorism, venomous politics by power-hungry politicians, but I decided to talk about the issue that affects so many women like me on a daily basis, gender equality. Being born as a woman, we are seen as something which is lacking in us, “we are not a man”, “we don’t hav...

This blog is going to be all about gender equality and how we can achieve it. It will also address various hurdles in achieving a gender neutral world. I would like you all to get familiar with me, the one writing this blog. I am Pragya Nolakha, currently doing my Bachelors in Psychology from Delhi University. Grown up in an Indian family,  I know how hard it is to actually talk about gender and women's issues. I have faced sexism, harassment  and sexual objectification like many other women like me.  I would like to take my readers on a ride where they will get to know about what my vision of a gender equal nation is like. I would share my personal experiences, thoughts and opinions on the matter, hence would encourage that you take out some of your valuable time and go through my blogs! Thank you people. <3
